Generating leads feels good. It’s a critical part of being an entrepreneur and growing your business. However, it’s not easy and can be frustrating at times. Getting to the point where your lead generation works consistently is difficult, but well worth the effort. For the most part, it’s a matter of knowing where to start.

Increase and Improve the Number of Opt-ins on Your Site

Getting leads is often a matter of making enough of the right offerings to attract as many people as possible. If you offer enough value and opportunities to get that value, you’ll get more clicks. It’s as simple as that.

Your site likely has sign-up forms at the end of each post; that’s fine, but your site can do better. All your content can have opt-ins, from your PDFs to your demos. Leverage whatever you have to offer. Pay attention to your analytics and figure out which of your opt-ins are generating the most leads.

Make Your Signup Forms Easy to Use

If you’re getting people to your sign-up forms but not generating leads, the problems may be in your forms. The more difficult your forms are to fill out, the more likely a user is to simply hit the back button and never come back.

Make them as easy to use as possible. Have the form immediately highlight any fields that require correction instead of waiting for them to hit submit. Get rid of any forms that require information you won’t use.

Have a Custom 404 Page

Websites are constantly changing creatures, and you may find yourself with a broken link or even a missing page. The good news is, you can turn that error into an opportunity. Nothing in the rules says that you can’t turn a 404 page into an opt-in opportunity.

You can have the 404 page apologize for the broken link and have an opt-in offer, or advertise a new product or offering. If you want to promote something, why not do it on a 404 page? You could even provide links to the most popular pages on your site.

Strengthen Your Social Media Presence

As an entrepreneur, you and your start-up probably already have social media accounts. Make full use of these accounts, as a strong social media presence gives your business more opportunities to get new customers.

Visual marketing is best on a social media site. Pictures tend to catch the eye more than a headline, and they don’t carry clickbait stigma. Instagram and Pinterest are great sites to use. Remember to not just share your products, but attractive pictures related to your offerings. Put up pictures of your team members, as well as corporate events. If the picture looks pretty and is related to your business, put it out there. Not only will this help get clicks, but it’ll give your company a face, making it more relatable and friendly.

You can also go down the curated content road. Share interesting articles and pictures other people made and increase your visibility. If you’re lucky, you can use shares as a way to develop relationships with other personalities and businesses.

Make Use of Color Psychology

The colors you use on your site and branding have a huge impact on your lead generation. For example, green tends to evoke harmony and love, while red is the color of passion. The effectiveness of your lead generation doesn’t just rely on your articles and your writing, it also relies on the shape and color of your call-to-action buttons.

Depending on the state of your start-up, you can have your graphic designer use colors consistent with your brand and the impression you want to make, or learn it yourself. Then coordinate with your site manager to get the right colors in the right places. Make your call-to-action buttons stand out, and have other buttons use complementary colors.

Lead generation is an important task for entrepreneurs, but implementation and figuring out where to start can be frustrating. Just remember that it’s an ongoing process, a marathon. Let your lead generation campaign sit for a few months and gather information, because it’s not going to get you thousands of possible consumers overnight. Give it time to work before changing gears. Eventually you’ll find the right mix for your start-up and give it the boost it needs to succeed.
